Quality Furniture For A Home Study Or Office

Hello once again to all my DIY blog readers. I hope you are all wrapped up warm with the bout of cold weather we have experienced in the UK over the past week or so. thankfully, this weather has not delayed the arrival of my order of office furniture to use in our new set up home study. Me and my housemates finally got round to moving all our accumulated random possessions from the spare room into the loft of our house, thus freeing up the necessary space to have a proper “work from home” area (which also gives me a great place to write and update this blog!) We have kitted the room out with with brand new office chairs which I think are quite chic, and also some decent quality shelves to store my notes and workbooks. I’m glad to finally have a proper workspace to operate in, as it can be rather hectic trying to work in your bedroom when you are living in shared accommodation and if the snow continues to fall on Leeds as it has been doing, then I may be forced to work there more often than I would like!

Winter Storage

If you live here in the UK, you will no doubt have noticed the nights getting longer, temperatures dropping and leaves falling from the trees meaning we are well into the autumn season. My thoughts have therefore switched to finding places to store my garden furniture and other outdoor items before the frosts get too heavy. A decent sized storage shed would seem to be a good option, and I can also whack in all my DIY tools and the like which have built up over the last few months. If you need somewhere to stash your car away from the falling leaves and don’t have a garage (or like me have turned your garage into a gym!), you can try sturdy structures such as metal carports. This also gives you a little more peace of mind and security for your vehicle.

Rapid Racking and Shelving

It has recently occurred to me that I’m running a bit short on storage space around the house so I’ve decided to put my recently purchased new DIY tools to good use. I have therefore decided that my next DIY venture is going to be to provide myself with that bit of extra storage space by simply whacking together a bit of racking and shelving in my bedroom and possibly on the walls of the spare room too.

With very little time (and cash) on my hands this evening it is indeed going to have to be some rapid racking if the job is going to get done! I start by once again visiting my trusty friend the local neighborhood skip to see what DIY materials he can provide me with today! A bit of student style scouring and scavenging later and I’ve salvaged myself about 6 foot of pine wood plank. I waste no time setting about the wood with my new saw, cutting the pine plank into several even triangular shaped pieces which will nestle nicely into the corners of my bedroom walls. I support the shelves with a very simple wedge which I also cut out of the plank. These wedges are then carefully screwed into the wall (if you’re struggling with the plaster, use an electric drill but be sure you don’t drill through into the next room!) Before adding the shelves themselves I give them a once over with a bit of wood varnish to make it a little less obvious that my new storage system is actually the outcasts of someone elses DIY projects! This may sound obvious, but make sure you allow the varnish to dry before screwing the shelves into the wall! In just 1 hour flat I have some rapid racking and extra storage for various odds and ends which have been knocking around my house since I moved in. It really is that easy so why not try your own hand at home improvement today!
