Having paid quite a lot of my hard earned money to have some beautiful pine wood floors installed in the new house a few weeks ago, I am naturally extremely keen to keep them well looked after in order to maintain there sleek appearance for many years to come. I have therefore given some thought to finding ways to maintain these wood floors – ideally at a reasonable price to suit my wallet. I thought I’d call in a flooring specialist on this occasion to take advantage of their knowledge, expertise and specialist equipment which who can no doubt massively help me out with bit of floor sanding, varnishing and other general maintenance to maximise the longevity of the floor. This way I can also hopefully take on board some new advice and learn a few “do it yourself” maintenance tips of my own to use in the long term so hopefully I wont have to pay the specialist to come in again for a while!

My latest offering here on the UK Homes DIY blog concerns a brief note about flooring – or more particularly the raging debate currently taking place in our house over whether we should stick with carpet or go for a solid wood floor. My housemates are arguing that we should replace the old stained carpet we have with a brand new one, which I agree would be a lot warmer during the winter months. However, I’m leaning towards a quality wooden floor like those outlined online in National Floors Direct as I feel it is so much easier to maintain and would add further value to the house. I also feel that I have the DIY skills to attempt to fit it myself – although my housemates tend to disagree! Maybe having got into a pickle in the bathroom I should call in a home improvement specialist to tackle the job!

Here’s a useful DIY tip I’ve picked up recently that I think I should share with all my blog readers. If you have a beautiful wooden floor that has developed some minor surface scratches there is an easy way to tackle the problem. I’ve learned that by using a soft wire wool pad you can actually buff a lot of these minor scratches away by hand. Ensure you focus only on the damaged area and gently caress the floor surface with the wire wool along the line of the grain. This DIY tip only works for minor surface scratches but I’ve found it useful in the spare room of the house where the floor has received some minor damage.
